YODOK III - Nidarosdomen

Even though I've seen quiet a lot, there are still many genres of live shows still on my bucket list - like full band plus pipe organ in a church.

Yodok III's live recording from Olavsfest 2023 in Nirasdomen, the church in Trondheim, Norway where Motorspycho performed their amazing "Konsert For Folk Flest", is a prime example of this kind of show, which makes me ache all the more to experience something like this myself one day.

YODOK III - Nidarosdomen (CD) (2025)

Well, at least I can claim to have seen Yodok III, the experimental trio of Dirk Serries (guitar), Kristoffer Lo (tuba and effects) and Tomas Järmyr (drums) live, in the Paradox Jazz club at Roadburn 2022. And boy, that was an amazing, giant, slowly building piece of improvisation.

"Nidarosdomen" delivers the same, yet naturally on a much grander scale - and aided by church organist Petra Bjørkhaug. Together they're weaving an incredible tapestry of Ambient, Drone, Post Something and Free Jazz, like a full moon stirring the tides of an elemental musical ocean, causing an infinity of waves to mightily crash onto the shore.

The almost one hour long uninterrupted performance is a masterclass of feeling out the right time for dynamic shifts, of always adding new textures when they're needed - and above all probably patience and restraint. Even though there's no dull moment, the fear of one occuring could easily lead lesser musicians to use up their most dramatic tricks too early. Yodok III however always keep another intensification up their sleeves. When all has already risen to overpoweringly monumental size, there are still pounding drums, a mighty feedback, a sky-high fanfare-like flugabone solo, more registers of pipe organ grandiosity to add.

After an accordingly long and satisfying outro, which - if I'm not completely mistaken - is finally even accompanied by the bells of the church, it's time to regain your breath and process what your ears and soul have just witnessed.

An outstanding, incredible performance. If you've been there in the flesh - you can be sure of my eternal envy.
