After my review of their fantastic show on the MS Stubnitz a couple of days ago the most logical logical next post is to cover the second joint album of Thisquietarmy and Otay:onii, which I got at the merch stand there. And since I've just written about these two artists, it also kind of gives me an excuse to keep it brief this time... So here we go!
THISQUIETARMY x OTAY:ONII - Serpents and Shallows (CD) (2025)
I must admit that the extra pissed off and intense energy at the show tricked me into believing that this album, which had been recorded during the same sessions which also birthed "Howl and Tell", would be the noisier and meaner of the two twin albums.
But while listening to it for the second or third time that misperception dissolved. "Serpents and Shallows" actually is the dreamier album of the two, there are more spacious levitating layers of Shoegaze atmosphere aboves the crushing Drone guitar and synth foundation.
All in all however the general combination of sounds is still quiet similar, with Lane Shis expressive vocal improvisations between beauty and despair contrasting the meditative deep end of the instruments and creating an immersive dramatic tension. This music could hardly feel more like pure emotional expression before even sensing the cause of the impulse.
If you dig the vibes of Big|Brave or the collaboration of The Lord + Petra Haden this will very likely speak to you. During the final track "Wet Feet" which develops a strong rhythmic pulse towards the end, I'm also reminded of the brilliant Avantgarde quirkyness of Dalila Kayros - or of course the Electronic parts of Otay:onii's own work.
Both she and Eric Quach really give their best here. So no, "Serpents and Shallows" definitely doesn't make it easier for me to determine my favorite Drone (and adjacent genres) release of the year. Breathtaking stuff!
