cassette craze chronicles XXXVII feat. PONTE DEL DIAVOLO, 夢遊病者 and THISQUIETARMY

Rediscovering forgotten problems of the the medium and being gifted a release so rare, noone but me will ever enter it into the Discogs database. Read all about it - and maybe also discover some great music you have missed so far - here in the thirty-seventh edition of my cassette craze chronicles:

THISQUIETARMY - Les Entampes (2024)

I bought this album back in November, when Aidan Baker's and Eric Quach's Hypnodrone Ensemble played onboard the MS Stubnitz in Hamburg. Thisquietarmy is Quach's solo moniker and "Les Entampes" shows us how he spent his time during the pandemic, creating a beautful soundtrack to the void of uncertainty.

Drips of Ambient, layering on top of each other until they become swooshing cascades. There may or may not be some other Electronic elements here and there, but most of this album seems to be built on guitars. Looped and manipulated with effects, clean and clear, mystically nebulous and atmospheric, huge and droning...

There's no need to beat around the bush: Quach really shows off his mastery in his Experimental style here as the album invites you to bathe in its deep sonic splendour. Thisisthisquietarmy at its best.

The cassette has a simple effective design, all about showcasing the artful cover and backcover photography, also done by Quach himself. making "Les Entampes" an all around wonderful release.

PONTE DEL DIAVOLO - TRE - The EP Collection (2024)

Not so wonderful was my first time listening to this compilation of three EPs, which the Italians Ponte Del Diavolo recorded before they released their great debut album "Fire Blades From The Tomb", which I will hopefully be able to experience live in full at Roadburn this year, on Seasons of Mist.

I was not disappointed by the music, quite the opposite. But after side A had finished the tape ripped! So there I had challenge: Opening the shell, which wasn't screwed but glued together without damaging it, fixing the tear, which was unfortunately close to the reel and then of course putting it all back together.
Did it work? Well, there are still some seconds of terrible noise and I accidentily switched the sides, so that A and B are now labeled wrong. Apart from that repair seems to have been a success and stood the test of a couple of spins. Yet honestly I don't really trust my craftmanship in the long term, so I'll probably won't put this into my player too often, just for safety.

It's a shame, because while they don't leave as big of an exclamation mark as the full album yet, the songs here already display the bands boundless exploration of Goth Rock, Post Punk and various forms of Metal between Doom, Drone, Post and Black, which should speak to any fan of Dool, Healythyliving or Messa.

The remastered production is sometimes still a bit raw - but in the best way! The drumming is powerful, the riffs are catchy and fresh and the partly Italian female lead vocals provide even more recognizability to this awesome Post Everything mix. Most of all Ponte Del Diavolo are just sparking with a fearless addictive energy.

The tape's artwork is what it is, fine and simple. It's a great compilation/album, so just don't let my anectdotic grievances with my personal copy scare you from missing out on it!

夢遊病者 - Delirium Pathomutageno Adductum (2024)

This package came as a huge surprise and it took me a moment to realize what it even was. I have positively reviewed the previous two releases by the international project also known as Sleepwalker, "Noč Na Krayu Sveta" (2012) and "Skopofoexoskelett" (2023). And due to this very column I was probably certainly the only writer specifically targeting the tape versions, which both were quiet different from other formats with a completely alternative artwork.

This most recent EP (with four tracks of exactly 05:40 minutes length each) however was not released on cassette. Well, actually, as you can see it obviously was released. It's just a very limited edition of - this is no typo - 1 (one) copy! Of course with a J-card with a different artwork from vinyl and CD - and with a lovely hand-drawn postcard. How cool is that? Getting attentions like that for this little (still time-consuming) hobby here is just awesome. Thank you very much, dear anonymous Sleepwalkers!

Admittedly this gift feels a little undeserved, because in all honesty "Delirium Pathomutageno Adductum" doesn't appeal to me as much as its predecessors, which had a more accessible atmosphere and were easier to grasp. Or to put it different: This one dials up the chaotic everything is possible at the time time philosophy of the band and condenses it to a point, which effectively makes it a much harder and longer work to adjust and dechiffre what's going on here.

There are a lot of vocals from Black Metal screech to Power Metal siren, instrumentals from all kinds of Metal, Rock, Americana, "World Music" and Classical, including many "exotic" sounds from vibraphone, oboe, french horn, accordion and many more tools. So no, that's not a radical conceptual change. But boy this is just very much stuff presented with a very low-fi approach.

Imagine chosing Pan.Thy.Monium's "Khaooohs", Amorphis' "Tales From The Thousand Lakes", some random Death and John Zorn from your record collection - don't forget to also throw some Eastern European and Asian Folk into the mix - and then recording it all over each other on an old 4 track tape machine! It doesn't work that way, I know. You don't have enough tracks after all, so you need to combine them and feed them into the process again. And after all that downmixing the end result feels kind of blurry and demanding to listen to. Phew...

No, this is not bad music. In fact these tracks are all still growing on me. But boy, it took (and still takes) quite some work to make this click! So this time I'm actually content with the short playing time, because more of this would frankly be too intimidating.

And in case you're feeling complety different and think this is an instantly enjoyable motherfucker like the two longtracks of  "Noč Na Krayu Sveta" - maybe I'm just downplaying the release so noone steals my no. 1/1 cassette?

cassette craze chronicles XXXI feat. ÅRABROT, NEKUS and 夢遊病者 (Sleepwalker)

No, even if I only solely concentrate on this task and let my fingers run like hell now, I certainly won't be able to write a review for all remaining 2023 releases in my collection before the year closes.

But cassettes at least? Yes, after this little bunch I'm good. Since I benefitted from promo access to all three of these (mini) albums, I even could have written about all of them a long while ago. And in the case of the first one -  I actually did!

NEKUS - Sepulchral Divination (2023)

Yes, I've already covered this Sentient Ruin release in a German Death Metal double review back in April, but as so often with this stuff from overseas I rather waited until this tape was finally available at a European seller until I purchased it.

With a very dark cover (don't trust my picture above!) and low readability it surely isn't the most spectacular packaging, but hey, I wanted this for the music! And on that side the band from Marburg provides us with some quality ghoulish cavernous Blackened Doom Death. The slower they get the more intrigued I am, which is good for the dramatic curve of the whole album, because especially the B side sees Nekus  stepping onto the breaks.

夢遊病者 - Skopofoexoskelett (2023)

And again: Yes, I have also written about this one before, and that has actually been very recently, because I named the EP as my seventh favorite non-album release of 2023. So let me just lazily parrot myself by saying that Sleepwalker once again made it almost impossible to pin them down in terms of genres or even music-historical time frame or continents associated with their inspiration. With a plethora of Classical, Jazz and ethnic instrument guest musicians and singers the enigmatic Far Beyond Post Black Metal trio takes us on an unfathomable journey between completely bonkers chaos which seemingly unites Blut Aus Nord and Mr. Bungle, and relatively relaxed Western and Doomjazz passages, while always maintaining a spellbinding atmosphere.

Even though the tape version looks great, it cannot make up for the only flaw of this release: It seriously just runs way too short.

ÅRABROT - Of Darkness And Light (2023)

With their previous album "Norwegian Gothic" scoring high in my TOP 21 albums 2021 it's admittedly hard to explain while the new work from Kjetil Nernes' and Karin Park's Church of Imagination didn't make it into the list this time. The main reason is simply that other stuff was just a little more important to me and that "Of Darkness And Light" somehow isn't as grandiose and multifarious as is predecessor.

On the other hand this new collection of Post Punk New Wave Noise Rock'n'Roll tunes really has no weak link; be it "Hangman's House", "Horrors of the Past", "We Want Blood", "Skeletons Trip the Light Fantastic" or "Love Under Will"... all memorable hits with strong hooks. As long as you like the vocals, which I know are a deal breaker for many listeners - luckily not at all for me -, this is a fantastic album even without that special Norwegian Gothic flavour. You know what? I probably f***ed up on that one. Guess I was just a little sulky, because the Årabrot / Jaye Jayle / Karin Park tour didn't come to Hamburg.

The cassette looks great. I mainly chose it over the LP version, because I think that the upright format suits the cover better - and it's also an artwork which doesn't need to be huge to work.

MUSIC 2023: top 7 non-album releases

Here's the (almost) best of the rest category. As always this ranking only consists of releases, which I own in some physical form. Like the title says here's the top seven of everything which is neither a studio nor live album. Re-issues are also excluded, while split albums form an exception from the rule. So taken into consideration were singles, EPs (I know, the distinction between album and EP can be foggy sometimes), split releases and compilations. And damn, I almost put Effluence's "Liquified" at the top, even though I heavily argued that it's indeed an album before. But then I realized that it already had been out there as a CD in 2022, so it didn't qualify anyway.

TOP 7 non-album releases 2023:

  1. LAIBACH - Love Is Still Alive

If you ever wanted to fail really badly at something, just try to unravel and seperate all levels of  irony and earnestness, of ridiculous fun and highbrow art in the work of Laibach! On its own their "Iron Sky: The Coming Race" soundtrack walking bass Country song couldn't be a greater cliché, yet it's also a fitting and successful homage to the movie "Dark Star". But then in the next step turning this song into a full-blown eight-part space odyssey, which travels through all kinds of styles and moods is borderline ingenious. The sheer fact of this being from the same group stunning us with the deeply moving orchestral "Alamut" performance this year, makes the EP even better.

  2. Few artists have impressed and touched me as profoundly as Chinese-American singer and experimental musician Lane Shi Otayonii this year. Her performance at Roadburn already won my ranking of favorite festival shows and this new mini album, which consists of entirely different songs than she played there,  came within a whisker of repeating that victory. On "Dream Hacker" her range of inspiration and expression between Eastern tradition and Western Pop culture seems more boundless and unpredictable than ever. Not from this world!

  3. The secret to a great split release is combining artists, who feel like different sides of the same coin, so their individual contributions add up to more than just the sum of playing times. WV Sorcerer Productions bringing together Belgian primeval Free Jazzers Zaäar and Tennessean trio Spintria's wild genre hopping from Drone and Dungeon Synth to Prog, Metal, Grind and Jazzcore is a paramount example of how this is done. Both bands' longtracks alone are already fantastic, but the whole of this barbarically beautiful LP is an epic Avantgarde masterstroke.

  4. And now that we have entered the world of musical Avantgarde extremism it's only logical to continue with Sarmat's debut CD/DVD, on which the band introduces us to their own brand of Extreme Metal / Jazz Fusion with a significantly extended rendition of the "Determined To Strike" album track "Disturbing Advances". In my book we can set this as the gold standard for this specific genre hybrid.

  5. Even more electronically minimalistic than "This Shame Should Not Be Mine" this EP also continues the album's concept by exploring life after the trauma caused by the abuse thematized there. Three songs of "PTSD" are new, the other two are alternative versions of tracks from older albums in the recent sound of the Dutch Post Post Everything band.

  6. You didn't expect to find a double 7" with Great American Songbook classics from the 1940's here? I wouldn't have bet on this happening either. But thanks to T.J. Cowgill bidding his alter ego King Dude farewell with his most Folk / Country release ever here we are now. Mostly performed just on acoustic guitar with ambient sprinkles on top and drenched in his typical cavernous echo, songs like "Oh Death" or "Riders In The Sky" expose their eeriest side, which makes this EP the perfect male companion (or counterpart) to Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter's "Saved!".

  7. 夢遊病者 - Skopofoexoskelett

With a plethora of Classical, Jazz and ethnic instrument guest musicians and singers the enigmatic Far Beyond Post Black Metal trio Sleepwalker returns with four tracks almost impossible to pin down in terms of genres or even music-historical time frame or continents associated with their inspiration. The only thing holding this amazing creative chaos back from ascending higher on this list is its dramatic lack of length. Being even shorter than the predeccessing "Noč Na Krayu Sveta" the twenty-five minutes of this so-called album seriously just aren't enough.

cassette craze chronicles IV (feat. ASSUMPTION, CHELSEA WOLFE, DSKNT, KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD and 夢遊病者)

Whoah, already? Yes? Here's yet another installment of my little segment hitting the play button on recent tape purchases old and new.

CHELSEA WOLFE - The Grime And The Glow (2010)
CHELSEA WOLFE - Unknown Rooms (A Collection Of Acoustic Songs) (2012)

The UK webstore of Sargent House is closing down and thus giving high discounts, so it was a no-brainer for me to snatch these last two Wolfe works which were still missing in my collection. Nothing spectacular regarding the package here, but then the price was also accordingly sparse, right?

The music is of course wonderful. Much closer to PJ Harvey than today, minimalistic, raw and sometimes challengingly shrill on the debut, pure and beautiful on the acoustic album. She may have only been ascending the stairs back then, but you can't deny that the artist on these two tapes is on the unstoppable way of becoming our all rightful contemporary gothic queen.

Two awesome albums which haven't lost any of their original impact.

The next four tapes were all ordered on last Bandcamp Friday (where the artists/labels get the full share of the profit without fees). And three of them all come from the always interesting black/death/avant-garde label Sentient Ruin Laboratories:

ASSUMPTION - The Three Appearances (2014/2020)

Originally released on CD in 2014, Sentient Ruin saved this EP from obscurity with a fresh run of vinyl and cassettes. And boy they did good, because the not three, but four tracks on "The Three Appearances" are a master class in thick, sludgy, yet still atmospheric doom death metal.

I can only approve the label's own promotional text when it places the sound of these Italians between Asphyx, Bolt Thrower, Skepticism and Winter. Especially the thirteen minute title track with its mournful contemplating organ, Morbid Angel lead guitar madness, psychedelic swirls and many other elements skillfully thrown in, is an enormously exciting crawl through the richness of possibilities within the subgenre.

DSKNT - Vacuum γ-Noise Transition (2021)

Could it be that the title is some kind of ironic nod to the fact that anyone who hates this music could easily describe it as just being the sound of several vacuum cleaners in different pitches playing at once?
The good thing is that this description also works just fine in case you totally dig the nihilistic apocalypse which the Swiss black metal commando DSKNT unleashes on this completely mind-and-body-annihilating monstrosity of an album.
If you love the recent dissonant death metal masterpiece "Imperative Imperceptible Impulse" by Ad Nauseam even close to how I love it, but your preference is black metal (squished together with industrial and pure noise) and/or you're just in a mood for more cosmic chaos and utter relentless aggression, this might just be your cowbell.
"Vacuum γ-Noise Transition" blasts with a level of unforgiving weird violence that is almost incomprehensible for human perception. If you deem this your prefered soundtrack for romantic hours, you're in urgent need of therapy. Just sayin'. It's bloody awesome though.

夢遊病者 - Noč Na Krayu Sveta (2021)

One may have noticed by now that I'm kind of in an extreme/avant-garde black/death spree at the moment. And yes, even after Ad Nauseam and DSKNT, there are still limits to be pushed.

Personally I wouldn't even per se categorize this new two-tracks/half-hour EP by the - let me quote - "Russian/Japanese/American experimental ritualistic black metal entitiy 夢遊病者" as metal.
The black metal riffs and voices and whatnot are there, but then there is so much more going on in this creative chaotic thunderstorm, which originates in completely different realms, most prominently free jazz, Middle-Eastern folklore, drone, industrial... yeah, it's a lot. And it's always a lot of stuff at the same time, performed by a lot of instruments including Moog synthesizer, fretless bass, quray and bouzouki by the three core band members, but also strings, winds, brass, oud, electronics, clerical choir vocals and whatever a kubyz is by several guest musicians.

This is Alice Coltrane and Toby Driver having a raging black metal baby. This is Mansur torturing Mono in hell. This is ambitious and beautiful, a piercing bliss so bright, it burns the eyes out of your skull.

Congratulations to Sentient Ruin for releasing this gem, which would also have aesthetically fit into the roster of labels like I, Voidhanger, WV Sorcerer or even Karlrecords. And while I'm already at it, thank you also for putting some real love into the artwork and layout of your tapes. Even though - common problem - the typography is really tiny, especially this package is a true beauty. Just as it should be to measure up to the music.

KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD - Teenage Gizzard (Manic Juice Records version) (2021)

Nope, I'm not even trying to find a smooth transition from Sleepwalker (yes, that's the english name for 夢遊病者) to the hyper-prolific Australians King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. When Stu MacKenzie's insane psych posse announced a whole bunch of "official bootlegs" a couple of months ago, I definitely knew that now was the final point to admit that I'll never even try to catch up with their discography.
Basically published by anyone who wants to publish them, most  of these albums are live recordings from (relatively, you know, you know...) recent shows, but also demos and other leftovers.

And even though some of the many additions seem to be absolutely wonderful works of love and art, I don't think that I realistically need half a dozen of King Gizz live album, so I quickly decided that the one album I wanted from that bunch was the best cassette version of "Teenage Gizzard", which pretty self-explanatory consists of the earliest - teenage - demos of the band, which I could find.
Fast forward to April 2nd I sought Bandcamp thoroughly and found this beauty with just the right artwork from the Canadian mini label Manic Juice Records, which is limited to thirty hand-numbered copies.

Musically infant Gizzard can't really be called psychedelic yet, but their at times almost punky, enthusiastic garage surf rock for sure is infectious and fun.

"Life Is Cool."
