THE NECKS - Travel

Pure Jazz or Post Jazz? The only answer The Necks allow is: Yes.

THE NECKS - Travel (CD) (2023)

Four twenty-minute tracks, not much more than four basic ideas. That's all the Australian trio needs. The rest is just musical synergy on a stellar level leading to a sound, which even though it mostly relies on the very traditional combination of upright bass, drums/percussions and piano/keys, unfolds a singular hypnotic quality, which cannot be mistaken for any other artist.

It's a sound which is built exclusively with blocks made a hundred percent of Jazz. The result however with shamanic fingers points beyond the genre to the atmospheres of Ambient and Post Rock without ever becoming one of those. In other words: Once again The Necks are The Necks are The Necks. And what else would you want from their latest bazillionth album?

In every track a simple premise flourishes to a journey of infinite colours. Yet strangely enough "Bloodstream", which for a long time foregoes the ever-present busy percussion for an alicecoltranish spiritual Drone, is the only track, in which even the greatest idiot can spot the dynamic development.

Of course every other track before it has it, too. But on first listen The Necks just feel so steady in both their rhythm and intensity, luring you into that out-of-body state of perception, that it's hard to fathom what a world of ideas has just actually flown by. How can this music be so simple, light and relaxant, yet at the same time such a wild stimulating Free Jazz ride?

The simple answer probably lies in the pure experience, chemistry and vision of a band playing in this formation since 1987. Ultimately there doesn't have to be any explanation beyond that. Not when the music is as unique and flawless as on "Travel". The voyage is its own destination. Godspeed!
