CAUSA SUI - Loppen 2021

What was the last thing I wrote about? That Motorpsycho show in Hamburg last Sunday.

Well then it seems like a smooth transition to continue with an instrumental band, which has several similarities in their sound, I guess. Denmark's kings Causa Sui have released a new live double album:

CAUSA SUI - Loppen 2021 (coloured ecomix vinyl 2LP) (2023)

Given that the band at the centre of El Paraiso Records has never played many shows a year, they already have released a pretty respectable amount of live albums - and the 2017 three LP box "Live in Copenhagen" still holds up as one of the most beautiful treasures in my collection.

So what's different about this new one, which has also been recorded in the Danish capital? (well, correctly almost there, because the Loppen venue is part of Copenhagen's famous freetown Christiana)

It's definitley a little more earthy, as it doesn't feature guest musicians beyond the regular line-up of guitar, bass, keys and drums, going less for the Miles/Coltrane inspired jazzy stuff and more for their classic combination of Psychedelic sounds with heavy Stoner Rock.
It shows in the setlist, which covers all eras, but features three (of in total eight) tracks from the 2013 classic "Euporie Tide" and also hard rocking tunes like "Mondo Buzzo" from "Return To Sky".

Of course there's also some lighter variety, like the Latin vibes in "Under The Spell", but all in all "Loppen 2021" carries a certain urgency paired with a palpable feeling of relief, an energy fed by the fact that it was recorded as one of the first shows after the lifting of covid bans on live shows in Denmark.

If you are among the lucky ones who have ever seen Causa Sui on stage - like I could finally do at Esbjerg Fuzztival this year -, you already know that this band just has that special magical it, the perfect storm of songwriting and chemistry in their musical interaction. And here at Loppen it shines in a remarkable distinct light. This is just golden stuff!

The artwork of the double LP is in Jakob Skøtt's overarching consistent El Paraiso style, maybe not his greatest work on first sight, but correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm reading it as an abstract interpretation of the Erdkehlgraven, the body of water which is surrounded by Christiana. Or maybe that's sheer coincidence and me having visions?

While I wasn't too happy with my last participation in a random vinyl colour lottery (see my latest King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard review), I must say that the two green-ish colour mixes I got here are very easy on the eyes. I guess in this case the spectrum of "random" was at last reduced to an array of tones fitting the artwork. Very nice!
