cassette craze chronicles XXXII feat. DEAD NEANDERTHALS

Yeah, this is one of those editions of this series, where I don't talk about three, four or six different recent tape purchases, but just... let me look it up... one. I'm simply not waiting for other cassettes at the moment, so who knows how long this little review would have to wait if I didn't do it now?

DEAD NEANDERTHALS - Ordo Dracul Demo (2023)

It has been an annual tradition for years now that at midnight on December 31st Dead Neanderthals have the last word of the year, usually with a digitally released EP. This year however Otto Kokke (synths), Rene Aquarius (drums) and producer / honourable guest on bass Marlon Wolterink (Plague Organ) also got physical with two eleven-minutes tracks on a limited demo tape. Yes, they actually added the nice touch of "Demo" in the title, as if this wasn't the final finished thing like all the other stuff in their discography. Sure, you guys want to apply to something with this! No, the word's just aesthetically fitting for the crunchy gnarly sound and its old-school black and white presentation.

The "Ordo Dracul Demo" was recorded on Halloween and - who would have thought - features two quite similar tracks of heavy vampiric crypt music. With a medium variety level (based on the band's standards) a dirty droning organ sets the nocturnal nightmarish tone, which immediately makes you feel Nosferatu's long old fingernails on your back, the rhythm section juxtaposes the dinning eeriness with some actually pretty catchy Doom grooves on "Decrepit Castle", while things get a little more sluggish and creepy in "Epitaph".

Both pieces ooze with this spooky quality that makes you know what the music is about in a heartbeat. In terms of stylistic categorization I'd say that Dungeon Synth Doom Sludge should pretty much cover it. In all its foul undead stench Dead Neanderthals' sound on this bloodthirsty tape is an astonishingly epic and cinematic score to full moon nights - and yet another respectable surprise only a couple of weeks after the fantastic Gilded Form curveball. Everything has been done right here, so naturally the cassette was sold out in record time - and I'm glad that I have one.

Dracula flew, so Dead Neanderthals could crawl.
