GILDED FORM - Gilded Form

You can always expect the conceptual framework of Dead Neanderthals to open up a little bit wider than usual when Otto and Rene invite third or fourth members to the party. With guitar player Nick Millevoi they now appearantly felt that their recording went so far off that it derved its own project title.

So does it suck then?

GILDED FORM - Gilded Form (CD) (2023)

Oh no, of course not - quite the opposite! I'm actually sure that anyone following the Dutch duo this far will also easily accept this album as part of their prolific discography.

With just one single forty-minutes track the format ist already very familiar and typical. And if you're hoping for music with complex composition and an abundance of events, you'll be parched in the desert here, especially since KokkeAquariusMillevoi chose to make this a tribute to a band being notorious for its uneventfulness.

Who could I be speaking of? Earth? Bohren und der Club of Gore? Both actually, since while this obviously celebrates Dylan Carlson's slow motion Western Blues of Doom, the synths could come straight from from the Ambient side of Bohren, while the drums are as important for the mood of the whole as they feel almost non-existent, in a permanent state of fading into oblivion.

Maybe what disqualifies "Gilded Form" the most from being a regular Dead Neanderthals song/album is that there isn't any aggressively demanding, exhaustive or sonically overwhelming quality to this (given you're not a radio music only guy of course). While I cannot deny a certain kind of gloomy deep undertone, this music is first and foremost a warm, smooth and completely soothing experience. This makes you step out of the grinding mill of time and stand still in the pause between two thoughts... until it doesn't.

Yes, the only flaw of the album is that it unavoidably has to end and fade away at some point.

Gilded Form = Dead Neanderthals plus one at their most transcendent.

Maybe I should have gotten the beautiful vinyl edition, but the artwork actually also shines in the CD version. And my latest car service invoice approves of this financial decision too, haha.
