Is this review relatively late because I'm busy working on three remaining Roadburn Festival reviews? Or are those reviews being postponed, because I'm already visiting and reviewing other shows? Both of course.
And once again there are more than obvious Roadburn connections, since only two weeks ago Temple Fang were the first band to open the festival at The Spark on April 16th, which was already their third appearance at the official pre-show. Add another Roadburn show, the Right On Mountain Festival in 2022 and - finally a show in Germany - the Lazy Bones Festival last October and tonight was already my seventh time seeing the epic Psychedelic Rock group live since 2019.
So is there actually anything I can add about their electric live performances, which I haven't said before? Because of course everything that has always been great about these Dutch masters of Cream and Hendrix worship, long build-ups, dynamic grooves, surprising transitions, awesome guitar solos, fantastic pink floydish vocal harmonies, the heavy Rickenbacker bass sound (not as present as usual, but the overall mix was very good nonetheless) and on and on... is still great - if not even better.
But this show in the small room of the Markthalle, in which they were selling their merch during their last appearance, was something special: It was the first time I saw them as headliners in a club, unrestrained by the time limits of a festival. So they played not only their new double album "Lifted From the Wind", which with continued exposure could very well grow be their strongest material to date for me, but also added an over twenty minutes long audience wish.
"The one with the skull!" - "Thats Not The Skull. Exactly the opposite!"
So yeah, all in all it was 110 minutes of complete Rock'n'Roll bliss, with a very respectable turn-out for a Monday and a long line at the merch table afterwards. Deservedly so, because - I've said it a bazillion times before - Temple Fang just sound like legends who could have hit the road with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple and were just mysteriously forgotten by time.
But in the real world they are thriving right here, right now. And you should absolutely go see them if you get the chance!
