The Chinese Fazi have been around for a handful of albums, and now as their latest work gets a re-release in Europe it's pretty obvious that they're not really the Post Punk band as which they are labelled. Rather Post Post Post Punk plus a bit of Pre Punk.
FAZI - Folding Story (2022/2024)
Even if we translate this into actually useful music genre terms, it's hard to narrow this album down on specific styles. The upbeat parts are definitely more robotik Krautrock than Punk. On the slower tracks however Fazi explore Alternative guitar and Electro sounds with Dream Pop vibes. And fittingly for the label mates of Wang Wen on both Space Circle and Pelagic Records there's a layer of atmospheric Post Rock woven into everything.
But honestly I don't think that "Folding Story" is the kind of release you should check out because you're fan of a certain genre X or Y. This album is much more defined by their interplay of modernism with timelessness and the emotions this evokes. It's a very easy listening experience, because everything seems very familiar. Yet on the other hand everything familiar is also done just that little bit different enough to make it interesting and exciting again.
All in all a pretty great beautiful Post Whatever album, which conveniently is not only available on vinyl and Cd, but can also be watched as a whole music video movie:
