BACKENGRILLEN - Backengrillen

So is Backengrillen just a German-sounding Swedish word or is it actually German and means what it says? And in that case - I'm asking that as a German - was zum Teufel does that actually mean?  "Cheek grilling"? Oh wait, I get it now! It's what happens with your mouth when you mistreat a saxophon like Mats Gustaffson does on this record.

BACKENGRILLEN - Backengrillen (Transparent Orange vinyl LP) (2026)

Even though I've just proven that actually wording a question on your mind can sometimes lead to its immediate answering within one paragraph, I'm not sure if I'm doing this whole thing the right way. Maybe I should abandon the written word and switch to picture reviews instead. At least for the debut album of this Swedish quartet made out of ex-members of the Hardcore Punk band Refused and Jazz madman Gustafsson that would be conveniently easy:

Musically there would probably be more suitable records for the right side of this picture, be it from John Zorn's classic Jazz / Extreme Metal crossovers from the early 1990's or from the discography of the band's own saxophone player, like Fire! or The End. On the other side however the opener's title "A Hate Inferior" is just so on the nose that I cannot ignore it. And Gustafsson has also unmistakenly proven that he's a sincere Coltrane worshipper in the past. Well, who in their right musical minds wouldn't worship Coltrane?

The picture surely isn't complete, but pretty much sums up the range of Backengrillen with a a sometimes slowed down, loose or stomping, sometimes panicky yet still stable Crust Punk foundation, on top of which two frontmen unfold their chaos; one being Dennis Lyxzén on vocals, channeling his inner Stooge in an agitative performance, the other Mats Gustafsson roaring, screaming and death rattling through his sax like a completely unhinged maniac - and also playing some live electronics stuff.

This album exudes dirt and rebellious energy, yet it defies categorisation. It's a bit like when completely out of the blue primitive Grind Punks Sore Saw Throat decided they wanted to make a Swans-inspired concept album and just like that recorded "Inde$troy". The difference however is that with Backengrillen it's harder to tell from which world they're coming in this analogy - and where they are aiming to go.

What's safe to say is that they are doing it slow, deep and hard, but without taking themselves too seriously. "Backengrillen" is fun, but it's also one of those records you can smell - which can get pretty nasty.

The band will be playing at Roadburn Festival this year, so I hope my schedule will allow me to experience this sick shit live!
