Bandcamp Friday Haul March 2024 feat. CHURCHLICKERS, REVEREND KRISTIN MICHAEL HAYTER and SENYAWA.

Despite all worries Bandcamp Friday still exists. So I nectlected at least two other shopping carts and bought a handful of new tapes once again. But those are to be reviewed later. Today I'm just taking a quick look (or better listen) at my exclusively digital purchases:

REVEREND KRISTIN MICHAEL HAYTER - Saved! The Index (2024)

This one's pretty self-explanatory, isn't it? More hymns and chorals! More "historic" low-fi recordings! Worn-out tapes and rattling prepared piano! More obsessive devotion!
The artist formerly known as Lingua Ignota had recorded as much material as possible for her intense bath in the blood of Christ "Saved!", so it was always clear that more of this special kind of worship music would be released. And here it is: twelve tracks, one whole full new album of traditional, re-contextualized and brand-new entries into the Reverend's gospel.

I'm not going to try to unravel the whole concept and mindset behind this unique musical religious experiment again, but will only say that no matter if you loved or hated "Saved!" - you'll certainly feel the same for this. It's more of the same. But the same is fantastic, astonishingly varied stuff, truly unlike anything else. So yes, I gladly take it. Hallelujah once again!

The almost fourteen minutes of speaking / yelling in tongues at the end is a bit much though.

CHURCHLICKERS - Whiteout
(2024)

Let's stay in church, shall we? The Holy Floating Chapel of MS Stubnitz to be precise. The live version of their eleven minutes long track "Whiteout" is not only a welcome appendix to the self-titled debut album of the Post Rock trio from Hamburg, but also a nice reminder of their show on the ship as support of Divide & Dissolve last September. And even if you haven't been there - what's not to like about some epic but raw guitar/piano/drums goodness?

And if you want more of this particular show, the band's YouTube channel has you covered with complete video footage.

SENYAWA - Vajranala (2024)

And finally from the church to... the temple? Please don't ask me to comprehend the concept of my favorite Indonesian instrumental duo! I just want to enjoy the unique spirituality and heaviness of their music, which is driven by the drones and hard hits of Wukir Suryadi's self-made, equally modern and ancient instruments and the incredible power, versatility and charisma of Rully Shabara's voice. This epic new track is a very intriguing preview of their next album.

Batarakala, the sovereign of time
Descends to Earth awaiting by the threshold fine
By the heavens' command to the wise and poets grand
In form of knowledge like dew upon the flower's strand
To soar as celestial beings nymphs of air and land
Kinara, Kinari, in their radiant band
