MANSUR - Pentatonic Ruins

The return of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble hopefully doesn't mean that Jason Köhnen abolishes other projects which are partly similar in atmosphere. Mansur have at least released their fourth album this year.

MANSUR - Pentatonic Ruins (golden vinyl LP) (2025)

Does this count as a "real" album though? The title, which has also been a track of the trio's 2020 debut EP "Temple" already hints at the material not being completely brand-new.

What Dimitri El-Demerdashi (oud), Martina Horváth (vocals) and Köhnen (all the rest) did on these nine tracks is new enough though. The recycling doesn't even necessarily reveal itself on first listen.

"Pentatonic Ruins" is a collection of renamed and reworked tracks from Mansur's previous releases. In the words of the label Denovali Records these new adaptions present them "in a more hypnotic and trance like manner", which pretty much tracks. There's more focus on the Electronics juxtaposing the timeless Folk elements, while the production also highlights the dreamy Ambient sounds. And above all Horváth's mystical voice hovers more front and center for immediate mesmerisation.

So far the trio couldn't do wrong - and this golden LP isn't where that happens either. Enchantng musical spells from start to finish, an album like drifting through the clouds. Gorgeous!
