WYATT E. - Āl Bēlūti Dārû

"Composed & performed by Wyatt E. in honour of Nebuchadnezzar II, son of Nabopolassar, King of Babylon, King of Sumer and Akkad, King of the Universe".

Ok, I get it, you want me to shut up. Because truly, what relevant information is there possibly left to add?

WYATT E. - Āl Bēlūti Dārû (black and gold merged vinyl LP) (2022)

Seriously, everything about this record seems specifically designed for me to worship it: Two tracks of mostly instrumental music oozing with orientalisms and a mood similar to the most esoteric works of drone doomers Bong or many releases of Jason Köhnen, especially from his projects Mansur and The Thing With Five Eyes.

A multifariousness of Persian, psychedelic and doom sounds, performed by standard rock instrumentation plus ethnic lutes and drums, cosmic synth and - because you know I cannot for the life of me resist that - the occasional guest saxophone. Everything in highly dynamic, rich compositions and with the mythic Eastern side completely at the forefront.

Damn, I'm almost feeling uncomfortably seen through in the way this music ticks all my boxes. And even though I know that the obligatory Dead Can Dance reference is somehow used up, it's extremely mandatory in this case, because the percussions on this album just sound so amazingly close to "Anastasis" or "Spiritchaser". No, you just can't make that rhythm section sound any more perfect.

Judging from the band members' names the trio seems to come from France, but honestly I don't even want to look up any more information about them, because the amount of myrrh and mystery exuded by "Āl Bēlūti Dārû" right now hits such a fabulously sweet spot.

This is an album approximately as magnificent as an ancient city on the back of a dragon. Absolutely love it!

DEAD NEANDERTHALS - IXXO

Is it the fact that it's just one and a half weeks from now, until it finally happens again? Or does looking at the stuff queuing in my to-review-lists also help? Fact is: Roadburn anticipation intensifies.

In that spirit let's welcome another great live album from last year's remote Roadburn Redux, the - hopefully once in a lifetime - streaming edition of the festival:

DEAD NEANDERTHALS - IXXO (milky clear vinyl LP) (2022)

There's not much I could write about this show which I haven't aready mentioned before. As always with everything Dead Neanderthals the music doesn't give you many palpable events to elaborate on. It starts and after thirty-five minutes it ends, and the most noticable incident is that right in the middle - conveniently placed where you need to turn the record on the B side - the robotik drum beat takes a two-minute break, before René Aquarius gets switched on again.

Together with Otto Kokke, who we hear on droning synthesizers, he provides an extremely steady, hypnotically automatik backbone on which their two guests for this performance, Aafke Romeijn and Jonge Woudloper provide even more, mainly improvised keyboards.

As parts of my vocabulary have already given away - this is no drone noise or jazzcore, but pure, brain-washingly repetitive krautrock. It wouldn't be implausible at all if this performance was not from these guys, but from bands like Kandodo or Radar Men From The Moon (who Dead Neanderthals' almost alter ego Twin Sister are coincidentally collaborating with for the grand Roadburn finale this year).

It's one of those sonically layered things which after a while makes you question whether everything you're hearing is actually there or just made up by your own head to complement the rest. In other words: kinda trippadelic.

The cute and clever (back) cover artwork - depicting the four musicians becoming one entity by controlling a giant Keiju Jaeger of a Krautbot together - is just absolutely brilliant.
Add some transparent vinyl with the right label on it and you have the perfect physical item to accompany this great piece of music.

Digital Harinezumi 3.0, indecisive April weather and red mode. Yeah, that's all I can say about this week's selection.

KING DUDE & DER BLUTHARSCH AND THE INFINITE CHURCH OF THE LEADING HAND - Black Rider On The Storm

I'VE ALREADY WRITTEN AN EXTENSIVE ENGLISH REVIEW OF THIS ALBUM ON VEILOFSOUND.COM! (The following text is mostly a direct translation of it into German.)

KING DUDE & DER BLUTHARSCH AND THE INFINITE CHURCH OF THE LEADING HAND - Black Rider On The Storm - Ballads Of A Cowboy Lost In Austria (CD) (2022)

"All I See Is You" hat dann diese dröhnendere Atmosphäre einer wütenden Post-Punk-Band, die in einer entweihten Kirche auftritt.

Wo "Dark Side Of The Moon" das Instrumental "On The Run" hatte, ändert "Black Rider" jetzt die Stimmung mit "The Drifter And The Dog".
To The Sun") ins Unbekannte ziehen.

Sehr saucool.

cassette craze chronicles XVI (feat. ANGEL OLSEN, GOZ, SORDIDE)

I'm trying to hold myself back a little with music purchases (well, guess how successful I am with that), so it took a while for this new installment of my cassette craze chronicles. But here we are again!

GOZ - Domus (2022)

A bassist plays a solo.

No, it's not a setup for a bad musician joke, but the actual content of this album by Goz, also know as Conçalo Almeida, whose work with several bands and projects (among them Albatre and Spinifex) I've  already covered here. With the help of some effects he has created an intense and interesting work of experimental drone. It's clearly made for fans of the genre or the farer verges of jazz. For those the two A-side tracks "Epicurus" and "Domus" offer a quite unique characteristic voice. On the B-side things get a little more noisy and atmospheric at the same time, as in "Sinius" Goz is joined by a friendly bloke called Torture Corpse on synths and knobs and stuff (I guess).
A great buzzing, swelling, scratching piece of free-form music. Nicely packaged, I only wish there was a way to optically differantiate both sides of the tapes. That always bothers me little - and is of course also a common vinyl annoyance.

SORDIDE - Les Idées Blanches (2021)

Do I even want to talk about this album in detail? The French trio Sordide is going to perform it at Roadburn only two weeks from now, but it's going to happen parallel to Jo Quail's "The Cartographer", which is quite mandatory for me. You know the great Judas Priest hit "Victim Of Clashes", right?

Well, this album still is of course a great banger. The tape version not being the most typical WV Sorcerer Productions release, this is a pretty "big" and modern sounding black metal album, which often gives me vibes similar to classic Samael and Behemoth, yet also - mostly subtly - hints at Blut Aus Nord, dissonant death metal and dreamy blackgaze. Awesome!

ANGEL OLSEN - Aisles (2021)

No, it's now the newest idea out there. Among many others Miley Cyrus has done it actually quite convincing. Long before her Atrocity have done it quite atrocious.

Yes, this EP is a throwback to the 1980s featuring five more or less schlimm hits. "Gloria" (Laura Branigan), "Eyes Without A Face" (Billy Idol), "Forever Young" (Alphaville), you name it! But Angel Olsen's lush yet still minimalistic synth - plus the occasional cello or guitar - renditions  of these song makes you forget that you have heard enough of this for a lifetime. Her emotional but never knödelig voice doesn't hurt either. The laconic lana del reyish sluggishness in Men Without Hats' "Safety Dance" also suits her.
The only track I can't really get warm with is "If You Leave", probably because the original by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark already reminds me too much of Nena's "99 Luftballons" in certain passages.

All in all the roughly twenty-five minutes of this EP still remain an entertaining and given the subject matter astonishingly intriguing affair.

EMMA RUTH RUNDLE - Orpheus Looking Back

Oh dear, April 1st was so busy. Maybe I forgot it over the outrage that a certain huge artist stole images of mine for a cover album (Read the legendary review by fellow Veil of Sound writer Gene HERE!) or I was just too busy enjoying and reviewing other new stuff... However I forgot to acknowledge that I indeed bought a non-physical new item on Bandcamp Friday - for which my blog still demands an immediate write-up.

Well, is there even much to say about it? It's Emma Ruth Rundle, it will probably be great, right?

I'm struggling a bit with Emma, not personally of course, but with her position in the newly released running order for the finally approaching Roadburn Festival. She'll be just in the centre of a huge clash cluster on Saturday, so I'll probably have to be content with skipping a heart-stopping show in favour of either at least part of a three-hour combined Lustmord/Karin Park/Årabrot performance or the mindblowing Kanaan, since I've already got my ticket for the postponed ERR date in Hamburg. It's still a painful decision lying ahead there, though.

But hey, let's talk about the music, shall we?

EMMA RUTH RUNDLE - Orpheus Looking Back (download) (2022)

Three tracks from the "Engine Of Hell" sessions, which somehow didn't make it on this raw and pure acoustic masterpiece. Maybe they didn't fit into the flow of the album. Maybe there just wasn't enough running time left, even though these are all quite short pieces around three minutes each.

"Gilded Cage" and "St. Non" both being acoustic guitar songs, may have disturbed the piano/guitar ratio.  They are both as intimate and beautiful as anything we've heard on "Engine" and a great addition to this artistic phase.

The stand-out track however is "Pump Organ Song".
Who would have thought, but it's indeed a song performed on a pump organ. And that's quite an interesting and captivating new sound in Emma Ruth Rundle's repertoire.

All in all "Orpheus Looking Back" is just the wonderful little EP you'd expect - with the only flaw being the lack of physical form. Its length is obviously made for a 7" release.

THE SURE FIRE SOUL ENSEMBLE - Step Down

THE SURE FIRE SOUL ENSEMBLE - Step Down (clear vinyl LP) (2022)

ELITISM - A Traavik.info Sampler 2011-2021

ELITISM - A Traavik.info Sampler 2011-2021 (CD) (2021)

Gespielt wird "Children Of The Revolution" in wildem Post Punk/Hardrock-Furor von Årabrot.

harineweekly 13/52

I could have done snowy winter photos on my way to or from work this week. But on that particularily white day the battery of my Digital Harinezumi 3.0 was empty and I didn't bring a backup. And later when I was home I was too tired and lazy.

I could still take some at least a bit winter-y pictures now. But alas I'm too tired and lazy again. And I've already been on an early morning walk to catch the sunrise, before it starting snowing again. At least I have convincing excuses. And who even said I need to take winter photos? Why even bring it up, man?

JOHN ZORN - Perchance To Dream

Imagine you're back in the early 1980s. You discover the early albums of a jazz instrumentalist called John Zorn and you decide: Wow, that guy is onto something! I will collect everything he ever releases!

Yeah, at least from a financial standpoint that would have been a regrettable life choice for sure. Probably still worth it though.

JOHN ZORN - Perchance To Dream (CD) (2022)

One of Zorn's several recent albums is this one named after a famous Shakespeare quote. It's one of those works, where he didn't perform on Saxophone or any other instrument himself, but put together a group of musicians to play his compositions.

The line-up features his longtime companion Bill Frisell (among many other things core member of Naked City, yet also guest guitarist on Earth's "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull"), organ player John Medeski, Brian Marsella on piano and Kenny Wollesen on drums and chimes.

What makes this album stand out immediately among a big chunk of Zorn's discography is that this music is sincerely beautiful and tender. No shock effects, no outbursts of shrill art or challenging avant-garde. No, this album is a relatively calm and contemplative experience. Yet that doesn't mean it's without profundity or unexpected elements.
What gives "Perchance To Dream" a lot of its depth is the choice of instruments and sounds. Piano and chimes, organ and Fender Rhodes piano are almost constantly creating those vibrant pervading overtones which seem to resonate right in your head. It gives the whole album a very dreamy, yet inspirational atmosphere.

The first track "Introit" is a meandering piece of almost neo-classical doomjazz from minds, who were there, before the term doomjazz was even coined. Underlained with ambience by cymbals and chimes the piano seems to work towards a melody for over ten very patient minutes without ever reaching a real solution.
The band is lulling you into believing that the whole album could be like that, but then follow it up with a surprising light swing in "A Secret Twilight". As the Rhodes and organ go through your whole body, the guitar light-heartedly soothes you with Latin fusion vibes.

The whole rest of "Perchance To Dream" is covering various aspects of easy-listenable smooth jazz. Even with the often prominent guitar this sounds very traditional, but still with that certain nocturnal Zorn twist. It's dark music, Nachtmusik, but it's not menacing or evil. The closest we get towards the edge of a sinister place is in the accordingly named "Hekate", in which the Greek Goddess, guardian of portals between worlds, shows you just glimpses of the chaos on the other side.

But then the soft piano and guitar in "Tenderness" bring you back into a most comfortable realm. No, most of the album is just beautiful and meaningful beyond my limited capacity of words.

In cases such as this it's usually a relieve that I can include a Bandcamp player or YouTube video and leave it to the reader's ear to complete the picture. But that's also John Zorn: To my knowledge there are no samples whatsoever out there. Buy the CD or die!

And I can only recommend to do so, before they get rare and expensive. Because this might be one of the most wonderful listening experiences you'll get this year.
